Dr. Debashis Ghosh was awarded the 2013 Spiegelman Statistics Award at the American Public Health Association’s (APHA) 25th Annual Lowell Reed Lecture Luncheon, November 5 in Boston, sponsored by Abt SRBI.
The luncheon is the premier event and awards ceremony for APHA’s Applied Public Health Statistics Section (APHA). Dr. Ghosh is professor of statistics at Pennsylvania State University. The Spiegelman Award is the section’s highest honor. Ghosh's work focuses on combining and integrating information generated across multiple platforms to improve medical decision-making.
This year’s lunchoen lecturer was professor Nan M. Laird, PhD, the Harvey V. Feinberg Professor of Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health. Her lecture reviewed some of the contributions and controversies of meta-analysis in public health.
Other award winners included Georgia Southern University Professor of Biostatistics, Robert Vogel, who received the Section’s Award for Academic Achievement. and Anne Stoddard, Senior Research Scientist at the New England Research Institute, who received the Section’s Award for Industry Achievement.
The APHA Section Chair, Dr. Din Chen, University of Rochester Medical Center, thanked Abt SRBI for its support of public health statistics. Dr. Charles DiSogra, the head of Abt SRBI’s Advance Methods Group, was invited to speak about Abt SRBI’s commitment to high quality data and statistical applications in public health research. Dr. DiSogra, an epidemiologist with expertise in public health surveys, was a recipient of the Applied Public Health Statistics Section’s 2010 Award for Industry Achievement.
