Experiment on use of Internet Cell Phone Only Panelists to Supplement RDD Samples
Based on most recent estimates, traditional RDD samples miss more than 15% of households who are cell phone only (CPO). While interviewing of cell only respondents is feasible, it is both costly and time-consuming. Survey researchers are examining ways of cost effectively identifying and interviewing these missing population segments. Abt SRBI explored the effectiveness of one possible solution: establishing a panel of consenting cell phone only respondents by recruiting them via internet in order to use it as a supplement to RDD samples.
Abt SRBI used Survey Sampling International (SSI) internet panel for this effort. The experiment compared cell only panelists recruited over the internet with benchmark data to determine its representativeness of cell phone only population. The survey instrument used existing questions from National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) and Pew Research Center surveys. A total of 300 Web CPOs were completed from October 15 - 25, 2007. Sample comparisons were made based on various attributes such as General Satisfaction, Satisfaction with Personal Life, health status, smoking behavior, religious service attendance, importance of religion, political party identification as well as political ideology.
